The Winter Forest

November through December

The Winter Forest is the studio’s Holiday group performance. For new students, this event is often their first experience of the studio community.

The Winter Forest is a place where all traditions are welcome. There are numerous celebrations during the winter, and nature is the tie that binds, woven throughout these festivities. There is room here to explore the many-faced aspects of this darkest time of year. There is light and shadow, joy, fear, hope. New arrangements keep ties with ancient songs. There are cotton candy clouds above the blood of the wild hunt. Students thrive with this. Miss Tess gives performers the freedom to choose where they want to travel in these woods. Commercial glitter pop songs have their place among the snow-covered saplings at the edge of the forest. Solitary, haunting music is easy to find further in. Miss Tess tells the older students that because they have the ability, and therefore responsibility, it is their job to dig deep and explore the more difficult elements present in this season. Each year, the students make their own beautiful way through the trees and share their messages from the Winter Forest.

During the pandemic, Miss Tess and her husband Sean delivered Holiday treat boxes with supplies to help students decorate their own piano areas. Performers brought their inner worlds to light, inviting the group into different clearings of the Winter Forest.
